Initiative 71 now allows DC residents to smoke cannabis inside their homes legally. You are allowed to carry up to 2 ounces of cannabis in public. Anything over 2 ounces is against the law and you are not allowed to smoke in public spaces.
Speaking of public spaces, with the new legalization of cannabis in the district, a lot of pop-up “private” parties have been happening in DC clubs, bars and restaurants. Even if the event claims it’s private and have a fee to enter, this event is still happening on commercial property, therefore, it is illegal. Granted, not every pop-up party is getting busted, since cannabis isn’t a major issue with the police force, but it is illegal. Only when events are held on private property, i.e. in a residential house, is it legal to consume cannabis. When you are attending private events in households, we urge you to use safety and caution in any place where you are unfamiliar.
